SEATTLE, Wash. – South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center on the south side of Las Vegas will host the 2010 edition of the Professional Bowlers Association World Series of Bowling, a 14-day extravaganza that will award six PBA Tour titles and pay $625,000 in prize money by the time it’s over.

The event, which will be open to PBA members from across America and around the world, begins Sunday, Oct. 24, and culminates with the taping of six television programs over two days Nov. 5-6. The shows will air on ESPN starting Sunday, Nov. 28.

“The inaugural PBA World Series of Bowling hosted by Thunderbowl Lanes in suburban Detroit last year was successful on a number of levels,” said PBA Deputy Commissioner and COO Tom Clark, “and it was a learning experience that gave us a base to grow from.

“The PBA staff has been working for months to improve upon the original concept, based upon input from our players as well as the needs of our corporate partners and ESPN. With South Point’s assistance, we believe we have come up with a revised World Series program that will be a great kickoff event for the record-setting 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season.

"South Point is an awesome facility,” Clark added. “The bowling center staff lead by Mike Monyak will be the perfect hosts. It’s a beautiful 64-lane complex with every amenity you could ask for, plus great room rates, a variety of excellent restaurants and it has experience in hosting world-class events. Bowlers from around the world are going to love being in Las Vegas this fall."

The World Series will be an open event. A one-time $750 entry fee will gain PBA members entry into the entire event, including a chance to win any of six different PBA Tour titles. There will be no Tour Qualifying Rounds or “World Series Trials” as previously announced.

● Beginning on Monday, Oct. 25, and over a span of five consecutive days, players will bowl 12 games on the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark patterns, respectively. The combined pinfall for 60 qualifying games will determine the standings for the PBA World Championship (which will pay one in three players with a $2,000 low-to-cash).

● As a bonus, the top 16 qualifiers on each daily animal pattern will advance to nine-game round-robin match play finals which will be held the following week. All 16 will cash with a $1,800 low-to-cash prize. After 21 games on each pattern, the top five will advance to the stepladder finals which will be taped on Friday, Nov. 5, and Saturday, Nov. 6, for taped-delayed broadcast on ESPN. First prize for each animal pattern championship will be $15,000 and each winner will credited with a PBA Tour title.

● The World Series also will produce a “USA vs. The World” TV event, which will be taped on Nov. 6. The top six United States bowlers after 60 qualifying games will meet the top six international players in a made-for-TV competition. During the 2009 World Series of Bowling, competitors from 14 different countries were among the more than 700 bowlers who participated.

● The PBA World Championship finals will again be the first live telecast of the 2010-11 season, but with another twist. Instead of five players, the top eight after 60 World Series qualifying games will advance to a three-day television finale. Details on the PBA World Championship television event will be announced soon, but it will reward the winner with a $50,000 payday and a major title.

“When we first began talking with our players about new concepts for the 2010-11 season, there was some understandable anxiety about formats, prize money and other issues,” said PBA Vice President and PBA Tour Director Kirk Von Krueger. “The PBA leadership listened to the players’ concerns and we’ve made a number of changes to address many of their issues. With the help of South Point, we have created an event that promises to be a very exciting start to our new season.”

The entire World Series also will be covered online by the PBA’s exclusive Xtra Frame video-streaming service. For information on how to subscribe to Xtra Frame, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame logo.

Complete PBA World Series of Bowling entry information will be available soon on pba.com, the PBA’s official web site. Non-members who would like to participate can also visit pba.com for information on how to join the PBA.

JACKSON, N.J. – Professional Bowlers Association fans attending the GEICO PBA Team Shootout in Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J., June 11-12, will pay “kids prices” under a special promotion announced today.

The fourth annual summer special event, featuring stars of the Professional Bowlers Association bowling outdoors on specially-constructed lanes at Six Flags Great Adventure, is a made-for-television team competition. The 2010 version will feature a friendly war between Brunswick, Ebonite International, Storm Products and 900 Global – four rival bowling ball manufacturers which have selected their own teams.

Admission to the PBA event is free, but requires a paid admission into Six Flags. Six Flags will help boost attendance by offering a special coupon for a “kids price” admission of $29.99 plus tax for the entire event. Coupons can be found online at pba.com and a single coupon is valid for up to four admissions.

Brunswick’s roster will feature New Jersey natives Parker Bohn III, a 32-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour champion, and 63-year-old Johnny Petraglia, one of five PBA Triple Crown winners and currently an active “super senior” on the PBA Senior Tour. Both are PBA Hall of Famers. Their teammates will include PBA Tour champions Sean Rash and Brad Angelo, and the only woman in the field, 20-time Professional Women’s Bowling Association titlist Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, who grew up in Linden, N.J.

Ebonite International will field former PBA Players of the Year Chris Barnes (Columbia 300) and Tommy Jones (Ebonite), 2009 U.S. Open champion Mike Scroggins (Ebonite), 15-time PBA Tour titlist Jason Couch (Ebonite), 2010 Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open winner Bill O’Neill (Hammer), and two-time PBA Tour titlist Mike Fagan (Track), representing its four bowling ball brands.

Storm Products’ lineup will include PBA Hall of Famers Norm Duke (33 titles and one of two Grand Slam winners) and Pete Weber (35 titles and a member of the Triple Crown club); Australian two-handed star Jason Belmonte and Rhino Page, the PBA’s two most recent Rookies of the Year; and Roto-Grip representatives Wes Malott, the 2008-09 PBA Player of the Year, and Brian Kretzer, a first-time PBA Tour winner last season.

Rounding out the field will be 900 Global’s star-studded roster of Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams Jr. (47 titles and eight-time PBA Player of the Year) and Brian Voss (25 titles); former U.S. Open champion Robert Smith, and past PBA Tournament of Champions winners Michael Haugen Jr. and Steve Jaros.

The 2010 GEICO Team Shootout will use the Baker team format where five players bowl two frames each to complete a game. The round-robin series of matches will be contested on June 11 and 12 (June 13 is the “rain date”). All competition will be taped for delayed broadcast on ESPN on June 27 and July 3, 4 and 11.

The annual Six Flags event will concluded with a special “Walk in the Park” on Sunday, June 13, when four PBA stars will help raise money to benefit Cure Kids Cancer and Children’s Miracle Network. Williams, Duke, Couch and Dorin-Ballard will participate in a one-mile walk through the park, starting at 9 a.m.

Each of the players, who will participate for their respective sponsors in the “Manufacturers Cup” competition.
Would you be interested in participating in that event or watching it unfold on national television or following the proceedings online? How about seven opportunities to compete for a title on national television at that season-opening event, does that have any appeal for you?

The Professional Bowlers Association is the only professional bowling organization that offers 50-plus years of history, national television exposure, media recognition and the benefits of that exposure by participating in its events.

It is going to be one Major Year on the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour! We already know that the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions will be the richest tournament in PBA history, featuring a million dollar prize fund topped by a $250,000 first prize check. Kelly Kulick will defend her title at Red Rock against a field of PBA Tour, PBA Senior, PBA Regional and PBA Women’s Series champions.

Details surrounding the 2011 U.S. Open and the 2011 USBC Masters with the remainder of the season schedule will be announced soon. The season’s first major will be decided at the upcoming $625,000 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling to kick off the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour schedule in Las Vegas at South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center in October.

With the input of PBA players, staff, corporate partners and ESPN, several significant changes to the World Series of Bowling concept will make for an exciting event for both fans and competitors alike. The first exciting development – any PBA member in good standing may enter the PBA World Series of Bowling for just $750, all in.

The inaugural WSOB last season was a bold concept to combine the elements of multiple tournaments into a single location. Built in are cost savings for the Professional Bowlers Association in the form of several travel and production efficiencies. Members are also saving in the form of reduced travel time and costs during the first part of the season.

The metro Detroit area, its bowling community, Erin Dobbins, Taylor Lanes, Tom Strobl and Thunderbowl Lanes were tremendous hosts for the 2009 PBA World Series of Bowling. Mike Monyak and his South Point staff will take the baton, providing the Major venue for the 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling. The facility at South Point is widely known as a tremendous venue for major bowling competitions.

Over the years many have said working smarter rather than harder should be one of the goals of the PBA – creating a property like the World Series of Bowling falls into that category.

Last year on the PBA Tour, seven separate tournaments were contested with seven separate entry fees: the Motor City Open, the five animal-pattern Championships and the PBA World Championship – six champions were declared in Detroit and the story of Tom Smallwood built until his incredible victory in the finale of the PBA World Championship in Wichita.

The action was chronicled daily on Xtra Frame, the official video streaming service of the Professional Bowlers Association. Improvements were introduced into the Xtra Frame production at the 2009 World Series of Bowling including PBA:39X60; Xtra Frame fans responded by doubling the subscription base.

This season, the 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling offers players the opportunity to compete for six PBA titles during the PBA World Championship. The focus of the WSOB is the PBA World Championship which will conclude with first-ever three-day live finals coverage in January.

That second exciting development bears repeating – three days of consecutive live television witnessing the battles from the Top 8 to the crowning of a $50,000 major champion. It has been talked about for years and never been done – multiple day, live national television coverage of a PBA event. It will happen in January to provide a thrilling live conclusion to the PBA World Series of Bowling.

The 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling will be completed over a tighter time frame than the 2009 version, providing an exciting two-week concentration of competition for both the players and the fans. One battle within the World Series battle will be the daily animal-pattern championships, each with a separate bonus prize fund and its own match play and televised finals.

Daily qualifying games, 12 of them, each in the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark patterns will form the finals field in the PBA World Championship at the World Series of Bowling after 60 games of competition. The PBA World Series of Bowling highlights one major tournament with multiple chances to cash and make the six television shows.

The second battle within the World Series battle is the new U.S.A. vs. The World televised event where the Top Six United States finishers will meet the Top Six International competitors in a made-for-TV competition.

The PBA World Series of Bowling is open to members of the Professional Bowlers Association in good standing. Whether you travel to Las Vegas to compete or follow the action live on PBA.com and Xtra Frame, it’s going to be a Major way to start the season.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Just a year ago, Joe Ciccone of Buffalo, N.Y., had lost his exemption to bowl on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour, and with his exemption gone, his dream of one day winning a PBA Tour title was severely limited.

Winning the 2009 PBA Regional Players Championship at Thunderbowl Lanes in suburban Detroit, however, became a life-changing experience. Along with the RPC title, Ciccone earned his first trip to the PBA Tournament of Champions, an $8,000 prize and a boost in confidence that helped him also regain his Tour exemption the following week in the PBA Tour Trials.

The PBA Regional Players Championship returns to Thunderbowl May 28-31 at Thunderbowl as a stand-alone event. There won’t be a PBA Tour Trials as a companion event this time around, but the ultimate prize at the end of the RPC rainbow is brighter than ever.

The RPC, a tournament open exclusively to non-exempt PBA members, is one of two PBA Regional majors, rewarding the winner a projected $8,000 prize, but even more valuable will be a paid entry into the $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions – the richest tournament in bowling history.

For a $295 entry fee, the RPC winner will get a shot at a record $250,000 first prize. A long shot for a bowler dreaming of one day becoming a PBA star? Certainly – but you can ask Tom Smallwood or Kelly Kulick about having big dreams. Smallwood, an out-of-work auto industry employee, won the 2009 PBA World Championship for his first title. Kulick, the first woman ever to get a chance to bowl in the Tournament of Champions, converted her opportunity into a historic victory for women bowlers in the 2010 Tournament of Champions.

The 2010 RPC will be a contest among the nation’s top non-exempt PBA players. For some, it will be a yardstick to measure their skills against the field, and figure out what they need to do to elevate their games to a higher plateau. For some, it’s just great competition. For others, it’s the first step in pursuit of a dream.

For bowlers who are not yet members of the PBA, but would like to become eligible for the RPC, click on any of the pba.com home page tabs (News, Bowlers, Schedule) and look for the “Join PBA” link in the upper right corner. For RPC entry information, visit pba.com and look for the “PBA Regional Players Championships” link under the Schedules tab.

For Xtra Frame subscribers, the final day of RPC competition on Monday, May 31, will be covered live on the PBA’s exclusive online video streaming service. If you are not a subscriber, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame logo for more information.

The PBA has announced Anthony LaCaze of Melrose Park, Ill., as the 2009-10 Harry Golden PBA Rookie of the Year.

As a non-exempt player, the 27-year-old LaCaze had to compete in Tour qualifying rounds for most Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour events last season to earn his way into tournament fields. In the ninth tournament of the season, he won the PBA Earl Anthony Memorial Classic in January to earn an exemption for the 2010-11 season.

LaCaze ranked 27th in earnings with $42,570 and 38th in average with 211.94. He made match play in five tournaments and his other top finishes included a 17th in the Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator, 19th in the PBA Tournament of Champions and 24th in the Motor City Open.

LaCaze’s decision to compete on Tour was solidified after a fourth place finish as an amateur in the Lake County Golden Anniversary Championship in Hammond, Ind., during the 2008-09 season.

“When I made the show in Hammond that gave me the confidence I needed to compete on Tour,” he said. “It proved to me that I could become good enough to win.

“After winning a title I feel like in a small way that I’m part of PBA’s history.”

LaCaze credited a lot of players on Tour for helping him during his rookie season. Most notable among those was 2005-06 Rookie of the Year and former Saginaw Valley State teammate Bill O’Neill who also broke into the win column this season by winning two titles including the Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open.

“I owe Bill a lot because he was really my mentor out on Tour this year,” LaCaze said. “The help and experience he shared with me were very instrumental in my success.”

While his professional career is off to a good start, LaCaze admitted the work has only just begun.

“You quickly find out that there are a lot of things you need to learn both physically and mentally,” he said. “I’m committed to doing whatever it takes so hopefully there will be even better seasons to come.”

Also receiving votes for Rookie of the Year were Tae-Hwa Jeong, Nick Weber, Dan MacLelland, Jay Futrell Cassidy Schaub, Stuart Williams, Martin Larsen, Steven Black and Johnny Petraglia Jr.

This week’s episode of PBA:39X60 features 2008-2009 PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott, who, despite finishing in the top 5 in just about every statistical category this past season, has said it was a “very disappointing year.”

Had Wes gotten a few breaks on TV (and during the position rounds in the Pepsi Red, White and Blue Open presented by USBC and the PBA Tournament of Champions…he just missed both of those telecasts), he very well could have repeated as PoY.

But leave it to Wes not to get his breeches all twisted in a wad about it. Heck, I even caught him yawning during one of his matches during the USBC Masters when he was about 100 up on Dave Wodka at the end of game 2.

As this week’s interview with Mike J. Laneside will attest, Wes off the lanes is more of a Big Softy than a Big Nasty…enjoying his time home in Texas with his wife and two sons and just being an all-around good guy to hang with.

You can watch the entire interview on Xtra Frame, plus the latest edition of The Bowling Show with P.B. Atkinson and another tip with The Most Important Chair in Bowling in which yours truly makes a special guest appearance.

So get ready for your holiday weekend with some PBA:39X60 today, and then come back Monday for LIVE Xtra Frame coverage of the finals of the PBA Regional Players Championship from Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Michigan.
